#1 Step by step

Rome wasn't built in a day! And the same goes for your learning of French. Don't expect to be perfectly bilingual in French after a few months of learning.

It's necessary to take it step by step and to reflect beforehand on the learning strategy to have. Yes, you read that right: a strategy.

Think about how you're used to learning. You are rather studious, you retain while writing and you like to memorize everything by heart. Or you prefer to learn by having fun or being immersed in the French language 100%.

Also try to plan some time to learn French. Look at your schedule for a week and see where you can take a few hours to learn French. I invite you to consult this article to help you organize your time to learn French.

Learning French is something you have to prepare for, it's a project you have to think about. If you embark on learning a foreign language overnight, you may quickly become discouraged.

It's like you start running. Before you start, you find specific running shoes, you prepare a comfortable outfit and you try to find a regular time each day to train.

#2 Indulge yourself

I think this is one of the most important points. It is absolutely essential that you enjoy learning French. It must not be a chore or seen as an obligation for you.

If it's really a dream for you to learn French, if you're passionate about the French language and its culture, then that's great! You'll really have a blast learning French.

If you are not really passionate about learning French, you should see it as an opportunity for your studies, your career or your personal life.

And to really enjoy learning French, try to choose subjects that you like.

For example, if you are a sports fan, you can watch videos of sporting events with commentary in French. Or if you're a fan of series or movies, I can advise you a lot of them in French, especially in this article : 10 best series to learn French (Vol 1).

#3 Don't scatter

Believe me, when you want to learn a foreign language, you tend to scatter and even get lost. How do you know whether to start by learning grammar, vocabulary or spelling ?

It's a little complicated to say it like that. The simplest thing to do is to turn to a specialized French teacher (like me), he will be able to guide you and give you indications and resources so that you can succeed in your learning.

#4 Be indulgent with yourself

Human beings tend to be very hard on themselves, but one piece of advice is to be lenient with yourself.

There are days when you will see your progress, your French will be fluent, you will be able to immediately understand something that seemed impossible before. And other days will be more difficult, when your words won't come out correctly and you will quickly get discouraged.

However, there is no point in being angry with yourself or thinking about giving up. Days like this happen to everyone. You need to stay positive. Say stop for now and start again the next day. Because as they say, tomorrow is another day.

#5 Setting goals

We're talking here about realistic goals. Don't set yourself the goal of becoming bilingual with just 2 French courses. Set yourself goals that follow your learning pace.

For example, give yourself your goals at the beginning of the week to be successful by the weekend. Like: "By next Monday, I can ask a passerby for directions in French" or "In seven days, I'll know by heart the time of the simple future in French".

Also ask yourself what you want to learn first. If in 3 months, you plan to go sightseeing in France, give yourself the objectives of being able to book a hotel room and know some basic French.

#6 Be proud of your progress

It's very important to be proud of yourself and to realize how far you've come. Be proud of how far you've come and the progress you've made. For example, if you've reached the goal for the week that you've set for yourself, give yourself a moment of fun or relaxation to celebrate.

#7 Listen, read, write and speak

Finished Eat, take, love! Now it's listen, read, write and talk !

In order to master a language, none of these skills should be neglected. I assure you, I've even experienced it.

When I was learning English, my main focus was on written expression and comprehension as well as oral comprehension. I didn't really have the opportunity to express myself orally in English and I admit that I'm shy, so that suited me.

However, the day I moved to an English-speaking country I soon regretted it! I was forced to express myself in English in my work and daily life. But when that happened, the words were in my head, I could have written them down but I had a lot of difficulty expressing myself orally, due to lack of habit.

In addition, with the look of others trying to understand what you are saying as best they can, it puts even more pressure on you and you inevitably lose your means. Especially since you don't always meet understanding and patient people. This can lead to a loss of self-confidence.

So don't make the same mistake I did: practice listening and reading comprehension as well as oral and written production. You'll have all the keys in hand to succeed in any French-speaking country.

#8 Get started

We're all the same! We want to achieve something, we have a project in mind, but fear blocks us. But this fear, don't listen to it, go ahead and listen to your heart and your desires.

If you don't, you'll regret it !

If you want to learn French, move to a French-speaking country or even get in touch with a French-speaking person, go for it! You have nothing to lose but everything to gain !
